Periodontitis Treatment

Periodontitis Treatment

Gum or periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and can put you at risk for other health problems. There are different types of gum disease, from common gingivitis that involves gum tissue infection to the serious oral health condition of periodontitis. All types of gum disease can put your oral and overall health at risk. Our dental experts at Smile Structure Dentistry & Braces offer all levels of gum disease treatments, including periodontitis treatment, at our clinics in San Antonio.

What is Periodontitis?

When a gum infection impacts the deeper oral tissues and bone, this is periodontitis. In some cases, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, but not all gingivitis will become periodontitis. The same bacteria that cause gingivitis are responsible for periodontitis, but the infection is more rampant. Oral hygiene, dental care, lifestyle and health factors can all impact whether or not you are susceptible to periodontitis. Those with immune system impairment, diabetes or who smoke are at a higher risk for periodontitis.

What are the Symptoms of Periodontitis?

The first symptoms of periodontitis are similar to gingivitis. The gums may bleed easily, feel tender and begin receding away from the teeth. When gingivitis progresses into periodontitis, deep pockets develop around the teeth. However, the symptoms of bleeding gums or gum tenderness may disappear as the disease progresses. Some people do not experience painful symptoms even as periodontitis weakens the bone and supporting tissues to the teeth.

Periodontitis treatment includes stopping the infection that causes the destruction of oral tissues and bone. While the bone loss cannot be reversed, treatment can save teeth and reduce bacteria that puts patients at a higher risk for stroke and other serious health issues. Deep cleanings and removing infected tissue may be recommended as part of periodontitis treatment.
