The difference between a dentist and Orthodontist
Which Specialist Do You Need?
Let’s start with simple definitions. A dentist is best describe as a surgeon trained and skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems related to oral health. The orthodontist is a specially trained dentist whose area of expertise is more focused on correcting issues related to dental structure such as the wrong alignment of your teeth.
You should visit a dentist if you need guidance on how to care for your teeth to prevent common dental diseases. Dentists also treat problems such as tooth decay, oral cavities, dental diseases, and bad breath. These are basically dental issues that affect your teeth, gums, and the mouth in general.
An orthodontist’s job is to give you a perfect and beautiful smile, after completing the dental procedure. Orthodontists handle issues such as crooked or overcrowded teeth, broken teeth, wrongly positioned and improperly aligned dentition that can affect your jaws, and malocclusion (bad bite).
Now you know which specialist to ask for in different situations, let’s talk about the dental treatment you should expect during your dental appointment.
If it is confirmed that you need to see a dentist, depending on the dental issue, you may undergo different treatment procedures. In the case of dental diseases, surgery may be required to remove the damaged tooth. Also, dental filling can be done to fill oral cavities, and deep dental cleaning to prevent or stop tooth decay. Issues related to the nerves and dental root are also handled by dentists, for example, the procedure to get dental implants.
Orthodontists use a different approach to correct and properly align your teeth. After a dental assessment, you may need to wear braces. Other dental procedures used by orthodontists include fixing aligners, or retainers to keep your teeth in position during the correctional process.
Regardless of your dental problems, you have no worries when the case is handled by experienced dentists or orthodontists depending on the situation.
